CLT Update
Tuesday, July 13, 1999

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the "temporary" income tax rate hike. It was ten years ago tonight that the Legislature voted to impose it on us "only for 18-months."

To commemorate this betrayal, CLT will stage its "Unhappy Birthday Party" at 2:30 in the State House - - AND YOU ARE INVITED!

Also in attendance will be Governor Paul Cellucci and Lt. Governor Jane Swift.

The below news release went out to all State House media and all legislators who voted with the taxpayers to keep the promise.

Come one, come all!

An Invitation!  To a Party!

Who:  The "temporary" income tax hike

What:  Is ten years old!

Yes, it has been ten years since the House and Senate voted to pass a "temporary" increase in the income tax rate from 5% to 5.75%. The rate is now 5.95%. Since you are paying it, there is no need to bring a gift.

The 10th birthday of the "temporary" tax will be commemorated!

When:  July 13, 1999, between 2:30 and 3 PM.

Where:  The foot of the Grand Staircase, near its 1989 birthplace.

"Let us eat cake!" A birthday cake will be served to the media.

Governor Cellucci is expected to drop by between 2:45 and 3:00.

Legislators who voted this year to rollback the rate to 5% are also invited to attend. House members who voted to cut the rate only to 5.75% may have only a sliver of cake.

The CLT staff will lead in singing "Unhappy birthday."
