For Immediate Release
A concerted fund-raising effort by
self-interested opponents has reached an historic
mark: Raising and spending over five million dollars
against a citizens' grassroots ballot question.
The "No on Question 1" ballot
committee has taken in $4,500,748.22 in direct
contributions and $519,838.69 from in-kind
contributions, primarily from labor and public
employee unions -- over five million dollars.
According to the latest reports filed
with the state Office of Campaign & Political
Finance, the "No on Question 1" ballot committee --
the Coalition for Our Communities -- raised
$2,409,263.22 in direct contributions and an
additional $76,401.17 through in-kind contributions
between October 2 - 15.
See:
http://www.efs.cpf.state.ma.us/BallotQuestionReports.aspx
$1,500,000 was received from the
Massachusetts Teachers Association; another $750,000
was received from the National Education Association
of Washington, DC, and; $70,000 was received from
the American Federation of Teachers-MA.
This brings total contributions since
the beginning of the year, direct and in-kind, to
$3,733,876.50 from the teachers unions alone.
By comparison, the Committee for
Small Government -- the "Yes on Question 1"
grassroots ballot committee -- has raised a total of
$228,090.68 in direct contributions and $1,900 from
one in-kind contribution; a total of $229,990.68
since the beginning of the year.
Obviously the teachers unions -- in
and out-of-state -- are the backbone of the "No on
Question 1" effort.
We hope when voters are channel
surfing and can't avoid millions of dollars of TV
ads, when they empty their mailboxes of "No on
Question 1" junk mail, and when they can't find a
radio station or newspaper without "No on Question
1" advertising, that they appreciate the nature of a
David vs. Goliath grassroots fight with little David
being overwhelmed -- but winning the contest in the
end because his cause was just.
