IRS to send out organ donor cards

Detroit - - Organ donor cards will be included in the federal income-tax refund checks mailed to millions of Americans this year. “This is an opportunity . . . to promise the gift of life to another human being,” Representative Dave Camp of Michigan said Thursday in announcing the new program. “It's the chance to be a hero.” The Republican cosponsored the law when it was proposed in 1995. The bill was signed in August. (AP)

When I read the following I almost choked! Just who's stupid PR idea was it to use the IRS to harvest our organs—and for just how long will it remain as “voluntary” as the 1913 Income Tax Amendment!
Look at the dismal success of the voluntary check-off for political campaigns. We won't contribute enough of our tax dollars to the IRS to fund them—but we'll just sign over *our organs*?

But think of the ad campaign. “We'll take your money, the shirt off your back, and your extra kidney—from each accord-ing to his ability, to each according to his need”. You laugh now, kids, but wait until the boomers are senior citizens, outnumber the next generations, and vote themselves young body parts.
“Your money or your liver. Preferably both.”
“Give me your eyes, your tongue; your huddled lungs, yearning to breathe free; The wretched remnants of your heart and pancreas; Send them, the homeless, extra parts to me...”
Let me be the first to sign up, because my heart belongs to Uncle Sam. I only regret that I have but one liver to give for my country.
