CLT&G Honors Talk Radio at Annual Dinner

Talk radio in general and three talk radio pioneers in particular were honored by Citizens for Limited Taxation & Government last evening at Lombardo’s in Randolph. At its annual Gordon M. Nelson Memorial Dinner, CLT&G presented the Warren T. Brookes award to WBZ’s David Brudnoy, WRKO’s Jerry Williams and Avi Nelson: "Pioneers in the Eternal Vigilance of Talk Radio".

CLT&G co-director Chip Ford surprised the gathered activists with a recorded message from former WRKO host Gene Burns, now at KGO in San Francisco. Then the radio in the function room was tuned to WBZ as co-director Barbara Anderson called David Brudnoy on the air to present his award.

The next award was given to Avi Nelson, who was present at the dinner to tell about his first time as a talk host substituting for Jerry Williams. Later, as host of his own show, it was Avi who asked newcomer David Brudnoy to substitute for him when he was on vacation. Anderson told the crowd that her interest in state and local politics began while listening to Avi in the mid-‘70s.

Jerry Williams, who has often complained on the air that he "never had a dinner," was the keynote speaker. After pointing out that this was a buffet, not actually a dinner, Jerry charmed CLT&G members with a combination of politics, reminiscences, and funny stories.

Talk show hosts from around the commonwealth attended and were honored by CLT&G, whose ballot questions have received a forum on the talk show circuit for twenty years.
The annual Citizen for Limited Taxation & Government award for citizen activism was presented by CLT&G associate director Chip Faulkner to Scituate activist team Norm and Joan Paley.
