CLT&G Joins Call for Federal Tax Overhaul
Tomorrow Citizens for Limited Taxation & Government will join Congressmen Dan Schaefer (R-CO), Billy Tauzin
(R-LA) and others calling for abolishing the U.S. Tax Code, the federal income tax, and the Internal Revenue
Service.
The symbolic tossing of the tax code into Boston Harbor from Beaver II, the historic Boston Tea Party ship, will
occur at 11:40 AM.
Congressmen Schaefer and Tauzin, co-chairmen of the National Retail Sales Tax Caucus, and other congressional
sponsors will introduce legislation next week to replace the federal income tax with a revenue-neutral retail sales
tax of 15 percent, and abolish the IRS.
While not endorsing this specific legislation without complete assurance that the income tax amendment to the
U.S. Constitution would be repealed simultaneously, CLT&G supports a total overhaul of an outdated federal tax
system.
"The current tax code and filing requirements are unnecessarily onerous and time consuming; confusing even to
IRS employees and CPAs; subject to special interest loopholes; intimidating and far too intrusive," said Chip
Ford, co-director of CLT&G. "While this proposal may not be exactly the right vehicle, it's moving in a positive
direction and will help open discussion for a long overdue overhaul."
One of the unpublicized advantages of a national retail sales tax is: Though they would have considerably more of
their earnings to spend, with every purchase taxpayers would become aware of the real cost of government.
