Secretary of State's (Unofficial) Running Totals
Greetings activists;
Barbara tells me that there's some confusion out there over the numbers I posted
yesterday *along with my explanation of how to interpret them* -- that some
nonetheless think the numbers are somehow official or the final numbers. I told her I
don't believe it, that everyone understands what a "snapshot" means, understands
what "preliminary numbers," and certainly what "they are the numbers available at
the specific time and date noted," means. And, how can you have a "running total" if
it's the final total?
But she insisted that I make it even more clear so that we don't chance ruining your
Thanksgiving Day dinner!
So here goes, just for Barbara: These numbers are *not* the official numbers, the
counting has *not stopped*; the numbers are a "running total," which means the
count is *still going on* -- that it is *not* done yet, *not complete.* Signatures are
still being counted by city and town clerks. Their work is not done yet. The numbers
will *keep growing* until all the clerks are done with the certification of all the
petitions, and they won't all be done until Monday.
Then, we will gather in all the petitions on Monday and Tuesday and add up all the
certified signatures in our own final count on Tuesday.
To succeed, we (and all other petition drives) need to have 64,928 certified
signatures when all the counting is over and done on Tuesday. If we do, then we will
turn them in to the Secretary of State on the next day, Wednesday.
The latest "running total" of the *still incomplete and ongoing* signature count -- as
of today (Tuesday) at 4:30 PM -- follows.
Chip Ford --
[The first column of numbers are the totals as of yesterday; The second column of
numbers are the totals as of today; The third column, "TOTAL", we'll save for the
final, real, official, complete, only-one-that-really-matters total -- when it's over and
done and we *have* the final total. All numbers are according to the Secretary of
State / city & town clerks computer certification system.]
11/24 11/25 TOTAL CLT&G (Tax Rollback) - 48,166 - 53,281 - ? LIMITS (Term Limits) - 32,368 - 39,365 - ? Free the Pike (End Tolls) - 51,983 - 59,334 - ? Campaign Finance Reform - 73,382 - 79,054 - ? ComFAST (Unearned Income Tax) - 57,102 - 63,806 - ?
PS -- *Repeated from yesterday's message*:
"Please appreciate that this is but a snapshot of an ongoing process that by law isn't
required to be completed by the clerks until 5:00 PM on December 1st. Also, we
make no claims as to the accuracy of these preliminary numbers; they are the
numbers available at the specific time and date noted, according to clerks providing
us with access to this new system."
