Citizens for Limited
Taxation
Supports the Governor’s Budget Recommendation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Barbara Anderson
Having read the Executive Summary, CLT is happy to support the Governor’s FY ‘16
budget.
We also looked through the Outside Sections, but without the past concern we’ve
had with recent budgets that a tax increase would appear there. Our favorite
budgetary concept is avoiding new taxes in order to focus on government
efficiency.
This was why we worked with former Gov. Cellucci on a ballot question to roll
back the “temporary” state income tax hike, and we are pleased that Gov. Baker
honors that 2000 vote and taxpayer message by supporting the rate reduction to
5.15 percent. Of course the rate of 5 percent is long overdue, but if Gov.
Baker’s vision for “economic competitiveness and jobs” works, we hope to see
that traditional rate again as state revenues rise with a stronger economy.
We wish that liberals could understand this vision, and stop arguing for an
increase in the state income tax and other taxes that would derail it. Focus on
“good, effective government” that helps everyone.
We don’t necessarily agree with all the House One priorities, but it’s not our
budget document: we recognize Gov. Baker’s expertise in budget matters,
especially in the health care arena. We do support the removal of the film tax
credit: that was just an excuse for some politicians to hang out with movie
stars.
Let’s see how it all works out; we look forward to living in a commonwealth that
works.
