Today the Tax Foundation released its annual Tax Freedom Day® report. In 2013, the day United States taxpayers as a whole stop working exclusively for their federal, state and local governments, and finally begin to work for ourselves and our families, was April 18th. In Massachusetts, the date was April 25th — the 4th-latest in the nation.

For 2014, the Tax Foundation estimates that Massachusetts Tax Freedom day is four days later, April 29, tied for 5th latest in the nation with Minnesota.

Beacon Hill may not be able to run a government efficiently, but it can strive to be Number One in federal, state and local taxation.

Washington-based Tax Foundation economists calculate Tax Freedom Day using federal budget projections, data from the U.S. Census and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and projections of state and local taxes. Tax Freedom Day by state has been calculated since 1990, when sufficient data became available.
