Republicans to honor anti-tax advocate
By Marc Fortier, Staff writer
BEVERLY - For the first time, the Beverly Republican City Committee will give out an award this month for lifetime achievement. Oddly enough, the recipient isn't a Republican.
Anti-tax advocate Barbara Anderson, a registered Independent, will receive the award at a dinner Friday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion's Herman A. Spear Post, located at 3 Judson St.
"The honoree to my way of thinking should be one who exemplifies our Republican values," said Judy Gillespie, chairwoman of the City Committee. "Whether someone calls herself a Republican or Democrat doesn't matter to me."
Anderson, a Marblehead resident, is well-known for her role as co-director of
Citizens for Limited Taxation and Government, a grassroots group responsible for several successful anti-tax initiatives, including passage of the 2000 ballot question to roll the state income tax back to 5 percent. She made her mark in 1980 by pushing for the controversial Proposition 2½, which limits the amount by which cities and towns can raise taxes.
"That was her baby," Gillespie said. "She's kind of a crusader. If there's a problem, rather than sitting around complaining about it, she takes action."
Though this will be the first time the City Committee has given out a lifetime achievement award, Gillespie said the goal is to make it an annual event.
Peter Davekos, former chairman of the Beverly Republican City Committee, will emcee. Gov. Mitt Romney and Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who lives in Beverly, have been invited, as has Massachusetts Republican Party Chairman Darrell Crate, also a Beverly resident.
Tickets for the buffet dinner are $15 per person or $25 per couple, and will be available at the door or in advance by calling Gillespie at (978) 922-5749 or Treasurer Jay Clark at (978) 927-9486. All are welcome.
